The Pomeranian has a profuse double coat: a short, dense, soft undercoat through which long, harsher guard hairs grow, so the coat stands off from the body and forms a ruff around the neck. It is the breed's most distinctive feature, but it needs regular care. Brushing down to the skin several times a week prevents matting, and during seasonal shedding it is needed every day. The double coat can be shaped with scissors, but it should not be shaved.
🛁 Bathing
Usually every 4–8 weeks – for dogs without skin problems a bath every one to two months is enough, and with professional care the bath is often part of a full grooming session every 4–6 weeks. Brush well before bathing; dilute concentrated shampoos according to the label and dry the coat completely down to the skin.
🪮 Brushing
At least two or three times a week, and every day in shedding season. Use a pin brush with metal pins and a slicker brush and brush in layers down to the skin: part the coat into rows and brush each one, starting from the lower part of the body. Finish with a metal comb behind the ears, on the backs of the thighs and on the tail.
🍂 Shedding and coat change
Pomeranians shed more heavily twice a year – in spring and autumn. At those times the coat is best brushed daily to remove the shed undercoat.
Tips for home
- Do not shave the double coat – after shaving it may grow back unevenly; shaping with scissors preserves the undercoat and the guard hairs.
- An active Pomeranian's nails should be kept short.
- Trim the hair around the eyes and wipe away tear stains as needed; if tearing is heavy, consult a vet.
- The hair in the hygiene area can be trimmed so that dirt does not get trapped in the coat.

How often should I bathe a Pomeranian?
